July 11, 2012 Mike and Nick Catch Big Ahis! Day 1

Mike brought his son Nick to Kona to get into some big fish.  Mike has a 29′ Blackman in San Diego and is an avid fisherman but the fishing has been slow there so why not fly to Kona for a few days to get some action?  Mike booked three full days with me to guarantee getting some nice fish.  Today we decided to fish big tunas since the porpoise has been holding nice fish.  Most of the ahis they are accustom to are in the 30-60lb range so anything over that would be awesome!  We looked in the same area we had found the porpoise in the last few days but they weren’t there.  Luckily, a good friend of mine had found them in the shallows.  There were already 6 boats working the pile so we went right to the greensstick.  On our third pass Mike got a good look at an ahi blowing up on one of our squids!  It missed at first and came back and inhaled the squid on it’s second try!  This was Nick’s fishing trip so he strapped into the chair and started fighting his fish.  He did a great job and got his first ahi to the boat in about 15 minutes!  It weighed 121 1/2lbs!  We quickly set up again and made another pass.  It was hard to maneuver with all the boats but we finally got another nice pass.  I marked another fish at 40 fathoms (240 feet) and as I bounced the squids in and out of the water it came up and blasted one of our squids!  Again, Nick got into the chair.  He did another awesome job on this fish and got it to the boat in about 10 minutes!  This would be his biggest ahi so far and would scale out at 124lbs!  More coming up tomorrow for Day 2!
