June 9, 2011 Kona Fish Report – Light Tackle Tunas

James Cochran, his son and Don Memmer joined me today for some fly fishing and light tackle action.  James fished with me about four years ago with hopes of landing a blue marlin on a fly.  On that trip we raised 5 blue marlin and unfortunately couldn’t get one to take the fly.  The big blue marlin showed yesterday so we trolled our way down to C Buoy on the inside ledge.  On our way we found a log that was holding some small ahi and skipjack tuna.  James and Don quickly got out their light tackle outfits rigged with poppers and caught a few 5-10lb ahi before the rough tooth dolphins showed up.  The dolphins sent the fish deep and shut down the fishing on the log.  We heard of more big blue marlin being caught closer to the harbor so we made our way back but unfortunately again were late for the bite.  Today, 2 fish were weighed…902lbs and 982lbs!  There were also a few missed that were all estimated over 500lbs!  The big fish are here!
