Fishing Kona Yields Another Big Ahi!

Since we did so well a few days prior landing 4 nice ahi, my dad and I decided to try the school again.  Anticipating a lot of pressure from commercial fishermen and other charter boats we changed tactics and brought live bait with us.  Our plan worked out perfect!  When we spotted the porpoise school there were several boats already there.  We set up just in front of the pile and saw an ahi jump clear out of the water a few yards behind us.  I bridled the live bait and sent it back a few yards behind the boat but before I could even let it back 20 yards the line took off and we were hooked up to what would be my father’s largest ahi he had ever landed.  In about 30 minutes he had a nice 181lb-er to leader.  The next few hours yielded the same results.  The next three baits we dropped back were eaten immediately by hungry ahi.  We landed another ahi which weighed about 95lbs and unfortunately I broke another nice ahi off on the leader that looked around 130lbs.  There’s a lot of nice fish in the school right now and the fishing should continue to be great right thru summer.
